Part of California’s largest public health district, this 175,000-square-foot facility on the new campus of Palomar Hospital in Escondido, CA, is integrated with the architecture to provide a sustainable design for the landscape. Several sustainable practices are proposed for the Palomar Hospital, including bioswale, a 60,000 sf extensive green roof and healing gardens. The overall goal in the design of healing environments is to engender a sense of well being within visitors, staff and patients in the environment. The site plan defines a campus-like atmosphere replete with healing garden, therapy courtyard, a sensory garden and quiet spaces for meditation or prayer. All reflect current research on the positive effects of gardens, plants and the outdoors on healing, patient preferences and staff loyalty and spirit.
